Cast Away director Robert Zemeckis won a Best Director Oscar for 1994's Forrest Gump, a film which also netted Tom Hanks the Best Actor Oscar. Zemeckis became the first director to release two $100 million films in a calendar year with Cast Away and What Lies Beneath, a film he made during the Cast Away production hiatus.
Cast Away literally describes Tom Hanks' life as he becomes a deserted island castaway. Hanks plays a busy, globetrotting FedEx employee who finds himself with all the time in the world after a plane crash leaves him stranded in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. With only a volleyball for companionship, Hanks survives four lonely years on the island by learning to use his wits.
Cast Away reunites Hanks with director Robert Zemeckis from 1994's Forrest Gump, which won them both Oscars. The Fox production was halted for a year while Hanks lost weight to realistically capture the effects of being stranded on an island.
