Russell Crowe's performance in Gladiator vaulted him onto Hollywood's A-List. As Maximus, Crowe deftly combined the raw intensity of the character's exterior and the tormented vulnerability of his interior. Broadcast Film Critics Association has named Crowe Best Actor. Crowe was nominated last year for Best Actor Oscar for The Insider. The summer blockbuster epic Gladiator stars Russell Crowe as Maximus,
a heroic Roman general who is betrayed by the ambitious son of the emperor.
Escaping from his death sentence, Maximus is enslaved as a gladiator in
North Africa. Surviving the bloody arena battles, he rose to the top of the
sport while plotting his revenge against the new emperor, Commodus, played
by Joaquin Phoenix. The DreamWorks production, a throw-back to old-fashion
Hollywood costume epics, was directed by Ridley Scott.
