Almost Famous is director Cameron Crowe's semi-autobiographical look at the world of rock 'n' roll during the 1970s. Crowe began his writing career as a Rolling Stone journalist in 1975, following bands like Led Zeppelin when he was only 17. Almost Famous has been honored by Broadcast Film Critics Association and the Boston Society of Film Critics for Best Screenplay. His last film, Jerry Maguire, was nominated for Best Picture as well as Best Screenplay in 1997.
The coming-of-age story is told through the eyes of 15-year-old William, played by newcomer Patrick Fugit. The film chronicles the tour of a fictional up-and-coming band called Stillwater, where William learns that families are not only inherited, but they can also be created.
Kate Hudson turns in a star-making performance as a "band aide" for Stillwater, which is led by Jason Lee as the singer and Billy Crudup as the guitar virtuoso. Though a critical darling, The DreamWork pic failed to ignite at the box office.
