Laura Linney delivers a breakthrough performance in You Can Count On Me. Her portrayal of the structured sister perfectly contrasts that of her disorganized brother, played by Mark Ruffalo. New York Film Critics Circle picked Linney as the Best Actress. Linney's most prominent role to date was in The Truman Show.
You Can Count On Me examines the dynamics between an estranged pair of siblings. Laura Linney is the older sister who stayed behind in a small town, while Mark Ruffalo is the younger brother who has gone on to a rootless life of self-indulgence. When the brother pays her a visit, the sister's well-ordered, well-mannered life is thrown into upheaval.
Written and directed by Kenneth Lonergan, the film tied for the Grand Jury Prize for Best Dramatic Film at the 2000 Sundance Film Festival, where Paramount Classics picked up the film for distribution.
