Joaquin Phoenix stars as the evil emperor Commodus in the epic Gladiator. Phoenix's portrait of self-loathing and frailty brings sympathy to an ignoble character. For all his performances this year, Phoenix is the Best Supporting Actor choice of the National Board of Review and the Broadcast Film Critics Association.
The summer blockbuster epic Gladiator stars Russell Crowe as Maximus, a heroic Roman general who is betrayed by the ambitious son of the emperor. Escaping from his death sentence, Maximus is enslaved as a gladiator in North Africa. Surviving the bloody arena battles, he rose to the top of the sport while plotting his revenge against the new emperor, Commodus. The DreamWorks production, a throw-back to old-fashion Hollywood costume epics, was directed by Ridley Scott.
