The Contender lands Joan Allen in the spotlight. Given the role of her career, Allen nails her performance as a politician under scrutiny with both intensity and sensitivity. Allen has earned two previous Best Supporting Actress nods for Nixon and for The Crucible. DreamWork's The Contender is a political drama that chronicles the nomination of the first female vice president. Jeff Bridges plays the president while Gary Oldman plays the political adversary who will stop at nothing to sabotage the nomination. The film is from movie critic turned writer-director Rod Lurie.
