For Requiem for a Dream, Ellen Burstyn turns in a haunting performance as a widow who takes to diet pills like a fish to water. Burstyn bravely dramatized the despair of her loneliness and the paranoia resulting from her addiction. Burstyn won the Best Actress Oscar for 1974's Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore. She also received nominations for The Last Picture Show, The Exorcist, Same Time, Next Year, and Resurrection. Based on the novel by Hubert Selby, Artisan's Requiem for a Dream takes a dark look at addiction in its many forms. The central character, Harry, sets out to realize his dream with his girlfriend and his buddy. However, the three succumb to their heroin addiction and spiral down individual paths of self-destruction. Meanwhile, Harry's mother's dream of appearing on a game show leads her down the same direction. Director Darren Aronofsky injects the film with a visual flair that captures the hauntng effects of drug addiction.
