Martin Scorsese's long-awaited epic was considered a front-runner for the Academy Awards -- a year ago. But in the aftermath of Sept. 11, and with the notoriously picky director still tinkering with the final cut, Miramax decided to wait another year for its release. Now, the sprawling, violent drama is among the studio's chief contenders for top trophies in 2003. Gangs has already earned a nomination from the Hollywood Foreign Press as Best Motion Picture, Drama.
