The newest of the major studios, DreamWorks SKG began in 1994 as a partnership between Steven Spielberg, Jeffrey Katzenberg, and David Geffen. Through its short history, the $2-billion company has struck deals with ABC and HBO for television production, as well as a $30-million joint venture with Microsoft. With an eye on the animated movie market, DreamWorks purchased a 40-percent interest in Pacific Data Images in 1996, and released the animated films Antz and The Prince of Egypt in 1998. 1998 was also the year DreamWorks received critical acclaim for the World War II movie, Saving Private Ryan. In 2000, American Beauty became the first DreamWorks film to receive an Oscar for Best Picture.
