After 1999's stellar year for original screenplays, the year 2000 offered
less quality, but still heated competition. Among the movies battling for
the Oscar are Cameron Crowe's autobiographical Almost Famous, Kenneth
Lonergan's indie fave You Can Count On Me, and David Mamet's wicked
Hollywood sendup, State and Main. Surprise contenders include the
sprawling multi-generational drama Sunshine, Neil Labute's Nurse
Betty, and the animated poultry wit of Chicken Run.
