Although this was the year Cast Away helmer Robert Zemeckis had two
$100 million plus earners at the box office (critically drubbed What Lies
Beneath was the other), 2000 belonged to director Steven Soderbergh.
With Traffic and Erin Brockovich, the Louisiana filmmaker has
a pair of films in contention for the Academy Awards. Other helmers of note
in this year's Best Director Oscar race include Cameron Crowe for Almost
Famous, Ang Lee for Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, and Ridley
Scott for the Roman era epic, Gladiator.
