Gladiator director Ridley Scott made his mark with such seminal sci-fi films as Alien and Blade Runner. But it was 1987's Thelma & Louise that first earned Scott an Oscar nomination for Best Director. Scott has revived the old-fashioned Hollywood epics with the blockbuster success of Gladiator. The summer blockbuster epic Gladiator stars Russell Crowe as Maximus, a heroic Roman general who is betrayed by the ambitious son of the emperor. Escaping from his death sentence, Maximus is enslaved as a gladiator in North Africa. Surviving the bloody arena battles, he rose to the top of the sport while plotting his revenge against the new emperor, Commodus, played by Joaquin Phoenix.
