Newcomer Michelle Rodriguez carries the film Girlfight as she becomes the character of a pugnacious teenager who talks tough and plays tough. She embodies the emotional complexities faced by the girl in this feminist coming-of-age story. The red-hot Rodriguez will next appear in The Fast and the Furious and Resident Evil. Girlfight is the story of a tough teenage girl who takes up boxing. Over the objections of her father, she pursues her boxing dream and becomes the gym's first female champion. While training, she falls in love with another boxer and the armor of her tough girl persona is pierced, forcing her to come to terms with her vulnerability and how it relates to her femininity. Girlfight tied for the Grand Jury Prize for Best Dramatic Film at the 2000 Sundance Film Festival. Writer-director Karyn Kusama also took home the award for best director.
