In Quills, Joaquin Phoenix plays the priest who runs the asylum housing the Marquis de Sade. Phoenix's Abbe de Coulmier is a hapless figure caught between repression and provocation. For all his performances this year, Phoenix is the Best Supporting Actor choice of the National Board of Review and the Broadcast Film Critics Association.
Quills speculates on the final days of the Marquis de Sade spent in confinement at Charenton Asylum. The period piece is set in 18th-century France and features Geoffrey Rush as the outlandish marquis. Joaquin Phoenix plays the priest who runs the asylum, while Kate Winslet plays a laundress who helps de Sade publish his work. Fox Searchlight released Quills, which was directed by Philip Kaufman from Doug Wright's adaptation of his own play. The National Board of Review has deemed Quills as their Best Picture choice.
