Tropic Thunder (TROPC) stormed the box office with a $25.8 million weekend to become the new champion. Ben Stiller (BSTIL) directed and starred in the R-rated comedy about self-absorbed actors who think the enemies they’re fighting are part of their movie production. Despite some controversy over its un-PC humor, the DreamWorks (DRMWX) release has tallied $36. 8 million since opening on Wednesday. The all-star male cast and the war-like setting appealed mainly to older men as its audience broke down 57% males and 67% over the age of 25. The Hollywood satire should enjoy good word of mouth, especially on a surprise appearance by Tom Cruise (TCRUI).

After a reign of four weeks, The Dark Knight stepped down with $16.4 million, still good for second overall. With $471 million in the vault, the Batman sequel has topped Star Wars’ $461 million to become the second biggest grossing movie ever.
Ironically, Batman also topped the latest chapter in the Star Wars saga. The CG animated Star Wars: The Clone Wars (SWTCW) debuted in the third spot with $14.6 million. The feature film sets the table for a fall TV series on Cartoon Network and succeeded in attracting primarily young boys, as 66% of the audience was identified as family and 71% were males.
Mirrors (MIROR) cracked fourth place with an $11.2 million opening. Starring Kiefer Sutherland (KSUTH), the R-rated horror film skewed female at 56%, with 60% of its audience under the age of 25.
Sophomore holdover Pineapple Express (PNAPL) scored $9.8 million, off a buzz killing 58% from its opening weekend. The stoner comedy has rolled in $62.7 million thus far.
The Woody Allen (WALLE) directed Vicky Cristina Barcelona (MBARC) charted at the tenth spot with $3.8 million from 692 theaters.
This week, Wednesday opener The Rocker (ROCKR) gets a head start on the competition, which includes Death Race (DRACE), The House Bunny (HBUNY), and The Longshots (LNGSH).
