Who will take home this year's prize for Best Animated Feature?
By Amy Lamare, March 19, 2003

A year ago, DreamWorks (DREDX) captured the first ever Academy Award for Best Animated Feature with its monster hit Shrek. Now in its second year, this category has five very worthy contenders competing for the little gold man.

The Japanese film Spirited Away (A3SPA) leads the pack of nominees. The critically acclaimed feature is the first foreign entry to receive an Oscar nom for Best Animated Film. Its had a modest box office showing to date, but Oscar gold could give it a whole new life at the box office. The story follows a 10-year-old girl who wanders into a world ruled by witches and monsters and where humans are changed into animals. The Award Option for this nominee is trading at a stellar H$15.92, far ahead of its nearest competitor.

Fox's (FOXDX) Ice Age (A3ICE), uses the same CGI-technology that DreamWorks used in Shrek. But will the fancy graphics bring home the gold for Fox? Set during the glacial epoch, the crowd-pleaser follows the exploits of a sloth, a wooly mammoth, and a saber-toothed tiger who try and return a lost human baby to its parents. Ice Age's Award Option trades at H$4.61.

Disney's (DISDX) Lilo & Stitch (A3LIL) grabs the number three position amongst the Best Animated nominees. In this 'toon, a Hawaiian girl befriends an unusual pet who is actually an alien criminal on the lam. The Award Option for this security is trading at H$2.14.

DreamWorks hopes to capture Oscar gold for the second year in a row with Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron (A3STL). In this tale, a wild stallion roams the Old West, befriending a young boy, and falls in love in the process. The Award Option trades at H$1.88.

And finally, Disney's second entry in this category is Treasure Planet (A3TPL). This retelling of the classic Robert Louis Stevenson story failed to capture a large box office showing. However, a win on March 23 could give it a new lease on life. This space age pirate's tale is currently trading at H$1.75.

With the 75th Academy Awards is now less than a week away, the Award Option trading frenzy is hitting its peak. Get in on the action while you can!
