Once again, our esteemed HSX traders proved their film savvy with their NominOption picks for the 75th Academy Awards. Traders were 82.5 percent accurate with their picks, going five for five in the actress and supporting actress categories.
Chicago (A3CHC) was the big winner with 13 nominations. This ties last year's Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring and trails just a bit behind all-time leaders All About Eve and Titanic. Chicago's nominations included four nods for the cast. If Chicago wins the Academy Award for Best Picture, it will become the first musical to be so honored since 1968's Oliver!
Gangs of New York (A3GNY) scored 10 nominations, including a nod for director Martin Scorsese (A3MSC), who has been nominated for Best Director three times previously with no wins. Other multiple nominees included The Hours (TICK) with nine noms, The Pianist (TICK) with seven, and The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (A3LR2) with six.
Notable snubs include Golden Globe winner Richard Gere (RGERE) for his role in Chicago and Meryl Streep (A3MSA) for her work in The Hours. Streep was expected to receive two nominations for her work in The Hours and in Adaptation. Instead Julianne Moore (A3JMF) took home the double honor for The Hours and Far From Heaven (A3JMH), becoming the ninth nominee to have two nominations in one year.
Here is the full list of Oscar hopefuls:
- Best Supporting Actress
One of the five for five categories, our traders correctly predicted nominees Catherine Zeta-Jones (A3CZE) and Queen Latifah (A3QLA) for Chicago, Kathy Bates (A3KBA) for About Schmidt, Meryl Streep (A3MSA) for Adaptation, and the aforementioned Moore (A3JMH) for The Hours.
- Best Supporting Actor
Players correctly predicted nominees Chris Cooper (A3CCO) for Adaptation, Ed Harris (A3EHA) for The Hours, Christopher Walken (A3CWA) for Catch Me If You Can, and Paul Newman (A3PNE) for Road to Perdition. However, traders did not pick Chicago's John C. Reilly (A3JCR), who scored the nom over Far From Heaven's Dennis Quaid (DQUAI).
- Best Actress
Movie Market traders picked five for five in this category as well! Nicole Kidman (A3NKI) scored a nomination for a second year in a row for her portrayal of Virginia Woolfe in The Hours. Renee Zellweger (A3RZE) also grabbed her second consecutive nom for her part in Chicago. Other nominees include this year's two-timer Julianne Moore (A3JMF) for Far From Heaven, Diane Lane (A3DLA) for Unfaithful, and Salma Hayek (A3SHA) for Frida.
- Best Actor
Traders were four for five in their picks for Best Actor. Jack Nicholson (A3JNI) was honored for About Schmidt, as was Daniel Day-Lewis (A3DDA) for Gangs of New York, Adrian Brody (A3ABR) for The Pianist (A3ABR), and Nicholas Cage (A3NCA) for Adaptation. Missing from our traders list was nominee Michael Caine (A3MCA) for The Quiet American. Instead, traders gave their support to Golden Globe winner Richard Gere.
- Best Adapted Screenplay
This was the weakest category for traders, who only got three of the five nominees. Correct predictions included Adaptation (A3AAD), Chicago (A3ACH), and The Hours (A3AHR). The Pianist (A3API) and About a Boy (A3AAB) were missing. Instead, our traders thought About Schmidt and The Two Towers would be vying for Oscar gold.
- Best Original Screenplay
My Big Fat Greek Wedding (A3OMB), Far From Heaven (A3OFA), Gangs of New York (A3OGA), and Y Tu Mama Tambien (A3OYT) were HSX favorites. Talk To Her (A3OTA) was the one our traders missed. They preferred the quirky Punch-Drunk Love.
- Best Director
Frontrunner Martin Scorsese (A3MSC) picks up his fourth helming nomination for Gangs of New York. Rob Marshall (A3RMA), Stephen Daldry (A3SDA), and Roman Polanski (A3RPO) all received support from both the Academy and traders. The one our traders missed? Spaniard Pedro Almodovar (A3PAL) for Talk to Her. Instead, NominOption support went to Peter Jackson (PJACK) for The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers.
- Best Picture
Traders went four for five in this category as well, correctly predicting Chicago (A3CHC), The Hours (A3HRS), Gangs of New York (A3GNY), and The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (A3LR2). Traders missed The Pianist (A3PIA), preferring to endorse L.A. Film Critic winner About Schmidt.
