With the Golden Globes gone and DGA noms out, awards season is in full swing.
January 22, 2003

Sunday night in Los Angeles, the Hollywood Foreign Press awarded Golden Globes to the actors, films, and filmmakers they deemed to be the best of the best for 2002.

The critically acclaimed musical Chicago (N3CHC) dominated the musical or comedy category of the Golden Globes, garnering statues for Best Picture, Best Actress for Renee Zellweger (N3RZE), and Best Actor for Richard Gere (N3RGE).

Chicago's MovieStock® (CHCGO) trades at a stellar H$80.77, while its NominOption jumps 1/8 to H$12.15.

In the drama category, The Hours (N3HRS) took home the awards for Best Picture and Best Actress for Nicole Kidman's (N3NKI) portrayal of author Virginia Woolf. Jack Nicholson (N3JNI) took home the honors for Best Actor in a Drama for his role in About Schmidt (N3SCH).

The Hours NominOption drops 1 1/4 points to H$10.33, while Kidman jumps 1/4 to H$12.28. Nicholson's NominOption is at H$11.89, while Schmidt comes in at H$10.85.

Adaptation (N3ADP) took home the Supporting Actor and Actress awards for Meryl Streep (N3MSA) and Chris Cooper (N3CCO). Their NominOptions trade at H$11.37 and H$10.98, respectively.

Meanwhile, Martin Scorcese (N3MSC) took home top directing honors for his epic Gangs of New York (N3GNY), and Alexander Payne (N3APA) and Jim Taylor took home the screenwriting prize for About Schmidt.

And finally, Best Foreign Film honors went to Talk to Her, from Spanish impresario Pedro Almodovar (N3PAL). Talk to Her is trading at H$4.52, while writer-director Almodovar is currently at H$3.96.

After the glitz and glory of the Golden Globes wore off, the Director's Guild of America issued their nominations for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Feature Film for 2002.

Stephen Daldry (N3SDA) landed a nomination for the Paramount (PARDX) and Miramax (MIRDX) co-production of The Hours. Peter Jackson (N3PJA) was also honored by the DGA for New Line's (NEWDX) The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (N3LR2). Jackson was nominated last year for the first installment in the Rings trilogy. Jackson and Daldry trade at H$9.03 and H$10.07, respectively.

Also on the nomination list is Rob Marshall (N3RMA) for Miramax's Chicago and Roman Polanski (N3RPO) for Focus Features' The Pianist (N3PIA). Polanski has been nominated for the DGA award two previous times -- 1968's Rosemary's Baby and 1974's Chinatown. Polanski's NominOption jumps one point to H$5.26, while Marshall trades at H$11.24.

And finally, Martin Scorcese is nominated for Miramax's Gangs of New York. Scorcese has been previously nominated for 1976's Taxi Driver, 1980's Raging Bull, 1990's Goodfellas, and 1993's The Age of Innocence. His NominOption trades at H$12.15.

The DGA awards are a fairly reliable indicator of who will take home the Academy Award for Best Director. Since the first DGA awards in 1949, only five winners have not gone on to win the Oscar. We'll find out if this tradition continues on March 1, when the DGA announces its pick at the 55th annual ceremony.
